The ACLU represented an interracial couple in the landmark Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia. The court ruled that the state`s prohibitions on interracial marriage were unconstitutional. Whether it`s achieving full equality for LGBT people, creating new privacy regulations for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or defending the right to vote or abortion rights, the ACLU is addressing the most serious civil liberties cases and issues to protect all people from abuse and overextension of the government. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. („LDF“) urges you to comply with the final passage of H.R. 1691, Religious Freedom Protection Act 1999 („RLPA“). LDF advocates for civil rights cases across the country on behalf of African Americans and other minorities to preserve equality, fairness, and justice in education, employment, housing, health care, the environment, criminal justice, and suffrage. The RLPA poses a potential threat to this type of litigation, as the RLPA can be used in ways that restrict the rights of African Americans and other minorities, seeking to protect themselves from discrimination under national and local anti-discrimination laws.
Help us fight this injustice by pledging your support, making donations, taking to the streets and sending a message to politicians at the ballot box: abortion is a right, and you cannot ignore us. Defendants in discrimination cases brought under national or local laws on fair housing, employment, etc. may seek to avoid liability by seeking protection under the RLPA. This would require individuals and groups proceeding under these state and local anti-discrimination laws to demonstrate that the law they wish to enforce is a least restrictive means of promoting an overriding government interest. This requirement would significantly increase the time and cost of court proceedings to pursue even day-to-day anti-discrimination measures and could therefore prevent or exclude some claimants from asserting their claims. Today, years of hard-won civil liberties protection are under threat – and to influence lawmakers, everyone must participate. Here`s what you can do. Select a radio button to filter actions by time. Wade, the nearly 50-year-old landmark decision recognizing the constitutional right to abortion. This decision is an unprecedented attack on women`s rights and reproductive freedom, and the implications will be immediate and far-reaching. Stay up to date on what we do and find out how you can get involved. When a room full of civil rights activists — led by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, and Albert DeSilver — founded the ACLU in 1920, the Supreme Court had yet to uphold a single claim to free speech.
Activists languish in prison for distributing anti-war literature. State-sanctioned violence against African Americans was commonplace. Women did not gain the right to vote until August of the same year. And the constitutional rights of LGBT people were unthinkable.
