And by the end of his second term, he no longer functioned, as some have noted, as „the Gipper.“ A person cannot be elected President if he holds a lucrative office under the Government of India or the Government of a State, or under a local or other authority under the control of such governments. However, some civil servants are allowed to run as presidential candidates. Uncommitted delegates or superdelegates can support any presidential candidate of their choice. The legal requirements for presidential candidates have remained the same since the year Washington accepted the presidency.
