Adolescents needed parental consent to marry because they had not reached the age of majority, 21. In the 12th century, the Roman Catholic Church radically changed the legal norms for marital consent by allowing girls over the age of 12 and sons over the age of 14 to marry without their parents` consent, even if their marriage was contracted secretly. Community studies have confirmed that in the late Middle Ages, women in England sometimes married without parental consent. It also committed to ending marriage among girls under the age of 15 and reducing marriage among girls aged 15 to 18 by more than one-third by 2021. Until recently, the minimum age of marriage for women was lower than that for men in many countries, based on the assumption that women mature earlier than men. This law has been considered by some to be discriminatory, so that in many countries the age of marriage for women has been raised to that of men. In rabbinic Judaism, men cannot consent to marriage until they have reached the age of 13 years and one day and gone through puberty, and women cannot consent to marriage until they have reached the age of 12 years and one day and have gone through puberty. Both men and women are considered minors up to the age of twenty. After twenty years, men are not considered adults if they show signs of impotence. If men show no signs of puberty or impotence, they automatically grow up at 35 and can get married. The average age of marriage by survey year and by women in three age groups suggests that the prevalence of early marriage among women in Bangladesh has decreased over time. However, the pace is too slow or even slower than in other South Asian countries such as Bhutan (22.8 years), India (22.2 years), Maldives (21.6 years), Nepal (17.9 years), Pakistan (20.3 years) and Sri Lanka (23.8 years).
According to a recent document, Bangladesh ranks 1st in Asia and 4th in the world in terms of child marriage. While the Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 was repealed by the 2017 Act, which retains Article 2 of the previous Act: the legal age of marriage for an 18-year-old girl and a 21-year-old boy, academics and social scientists believe that the special provision added to Article 19 of the Restriction of Child Marriage Act 2017 will not help reduce child marriage in Bangladesh. In fact, no law or law against child marriage will work effectively until people are aware of the devastating effects of child marriage on the individual, family and social levels. The consciousness of the masses develops essentially from the improvement of socio-economic and cultural factors. This study shows that raising the age of marriage is associated with major structural changes in society. Women`s education plays a leading role in this change. A strong positive correlation between respondents` education and age at marriage recommends increasing both women`s education rates and education levels. This is perhaps the most effective way to advance the nation and women at the individual level. It should be noted that there are various government projects in Bangladesh aimed at promoting children`s education. Among these, free education for girls up to grade 10 and scholarships for female students are two important projects that are expected to continue until it is confirmed that no girl in Bangladesh will be married until she reaches minimum secondary education, which will lead to a rapid decline in early marriage. This article explores the use of descriptive statistics to describe the age at first marriage of women aged 20 and older.
The chi-square attribute independence test is used to observe the relationship between age at marriage and each of the selected covariates. In order to identify the determinants of age at marriage and to better assess the impact of the determinants, the techniques of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and multiple classification analysis (MCA) are used sequentially to the data. Finally, a binary logistic regression technique is applied to study the responsibility of covariates in early/late marriages. This technique is repeated three times. Model 1 contains only the current age. Model 2 is used to obtain the net effect of current age on age at marriage after controlling for all other covariates. Model 3 is used to study the influence of education on age at marriage over time. By signing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other similar conventions, and based on laws and guidelines concerning children, the government defined anyone under the age of 18 as a child. Asked if the new law contradicted this, Minister of State for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki told Prothom Alo: „We have made a decision about age. The minimum age for marriage is 18. But what happens if someone under the age of 18 gets pregnant? In her view, women with disabilities and other special cases should also be taken into account.
Even in developed countries, there are such provisions for marriage with parental consent. She said they had taken into account all the factors related to the law. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the rise of the Holy Roman Empire, land ownership also contributed to weakening kinship ties and thus clan power; As early as the 9th century, in the northwest of France, there were small families working on estates, consisting of parents and children and sometimes a grandparent. The Roman Catholic Church and the state had become allies in order to extinguish the solidarity and thus the political power of the clans; The Church sought to replace traditional religion, the vehicle of which was the kinship group, and to replace the authority of the elders of the kinship group with that of a former religious; At the same time, the king`s rule was undermined by the uprisings of the most powerful groups, clans or sections of kinship, whose conspiracies and murders threatened the power of the state and also the demands of the landowners for obedient and docile workers. Since peasants and serfs lived and worked on farms they had rented from the landlord, they also needed the landlord`s permission to marry.
