The term pro bono comes from the Latin term pro bono publico, which means „for the common good.“ Pro bono today refers to a very wide range of legal work performed voluntarily and free of charge in the interest of society. Hiring Legal Counsel – Only members of the School`s Administrative Committee or Service Managers are authorized to retain external legal counsel on behalf of the School. There are some exceptions to this rule so that key employees can hire lawyers. However, these arrangements must be agreed upon by the responsible department manager, as he is responsible for the expenses of his department. Before joining the London School of Economics and Political Science, she was Head of Legal Affairs at an Embassy in London. Please note that we do not provide legal advice on tax, litigation or insolvency matters. A small but growing charity that provides free legal advice to people with disabilities and their caregivers. Established in 1975, the Disability Law Unit provides advice on employment, discrimination, benefits, community care, housing and debt. In addition, DLS advocates for changes to laws and policies, either on its own initiative or to support other disability charities. Volunteering occurs from time to time in all areas of law covered by the disability rights department. Volunteers are trained in the respective field and case management system before answering calls with clients, giving initial advice, writing letters and conducting legal research. All work is carefully supervised by the professional team. Volunteers work either at the DSL office or remotely. A commitment of at least one day a week (or the equivalent if you`re working remotely) for a six-month period is required – although free time for studies and exams is fine, of course. The school does not have an intellectual property policy. As such, the School adopts the general legal position of the United Kingdom under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and deals with all intellectual property matters on a case-by-case basis.

Pro Bono Community aims to increase the quantity and quality of advice provided by well-trained and highly motivated volunteers as one of the few practical ways to fill the legal advice gap created by the elimination of government funding. Pro Bono Community offers specialized training aimed at equipping law students, articling students, and junior lawyers with the skills and expertise to volunteer in legal centers and consulting agencies. To this end, he received a grant from the City Bridge Trust to train cohorts of law students and place them as volunteers in counselling centres across London. The training program introduces students to the sector, customer service and recent social reforms before completing volunteer placements to provide assistance in handling customer-facing cases.
